PENANG GLOBAL CITY CENTRE PROJECT: KOH: WE'LL LOOK INTO ALL CONCERNS
Thursday, 18 October 2007
GEORGE TOWN: The state government has given an assurance that it will address all issues raised by the people and non-governmental organisations here regarding the Penang Global City Centre (PGCC) project.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon also hinted that there may be some modifications to the project.

"We are working on it. Whether to approve the project as it is or with modifications, will be decided later.

"We are just as concerned as everyone else about the issues that have been raised about the PGCC and we will monitor the public's input and ideas about the project," he said.

Koh said the state government would assess feedback before taking the next step.Asked if the state government planned to have a public hearing since there had been numerous concerns raised by NGOs and people, Koh said: "If the people want a dialogue about the project we can arrange a meeting with the developer.

As it is, the Penang Island Municipal Council has officially met with residents who would be directly affected by the project."

He said although the PGCC would generate a lot of economic-related activities, there was bound to be reservations whenever a massive project was planned.

"I remember what happened in 1971 and 1972 when we planned to construct Komtar, the Free Trade Zone in Bayan Lepas and later the Penang Outer Ring Road Project (PORR) in 2001.

"There were many objections then, but people are now asking us to construct the ring road quickly," he said.

On the PORR project, Koh said the state government was working closely with the federal government.

"This is an important project and we are 10 years behind time. The PORR will help ease traffic congestion leading to the PGCC ," he added.

The RM25-billion PGCC project will be carried out by Equine Capital Berhad associate company, Abad Naluri Sdn Bhd, on 104ha of the Penang Turf Club land here.
